OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman just made some bold claims about the near-future of AI, and they’re worth paying attention to.
During a recent panel discussion, Altman made one of his most direct statements yet about the trajectory of AI.
He expressed strong confidence that the next two years will bring even more dramatic advancements than we've seen recently. Specifically, he suggested that the progress we'll see from February 2025 to February 2027 will be more impressive than the advancements of the last two years.
That’s a remarkable statement, given the rapid pace of AI development we've already witnessed.
Altman was particularly enthusiastic about AI's potential to accelerate scientific discovery. He predicted that within a few years, AI systems will be capable of compressing 10 years of scientific progress into a single year. He believes this could lead to major breakthroughs in areas like climate change and disease treatment.

I got the scoop from Marketing AI Institute founder and CEO Paul Roetzer on Episode 135 of The Artificial Intelligence Show.
As part of the discussion, Altman asked the panel audience, "How many people here feel smarter than GPT-4?"
Some hands went up, accompanied by laughter.
Then he asked, "How many of you still think you're going to be smarter than GPT-5?"
The laughter subsided. Very few, if any, hands were raised.
Altman then stated, "I don't think I'm going to be smarter than GPT-5, and I don't feel sad about it because I think it just means that we'll be able to use it to do incredible things."
Then, in an essay he published after the event titled “Three Observations,” he outlined exactly why that is likely to be the case.
In the essay, Altman outlines three core observations about the coming advancements in AI:
The intelligence of AI models scales with the logarithm of resources (computing power, data, etc.) used to train and run them. This means companies can spend virtually unlimited amounts of money to achieve continuous, predictable gains in AI capabilities. This pattern holds true across many orders of magnitude.
The price to use a given level of AI falls by roughly 10X every 12 months. This rate far outpaces Moore's Law (which historically doubled computing power every 18 months).
The socioeconomic value of linearly increasing AI intelligence is super-exponential. Even modest gains in AI capabilities can generate disproportionately large benefits, driving massive investment in AI development.
Altman also envisions a future where AI agents function as virtual coworkers, particularly in knowledge work. He suggested that by 2035, any individual could have access to intellectual capacity equivalent to everyone alive in 2025.
You can love Sam Altman or hate him, but the simple fact is: He's making incredibly bold, specific predictions that we'll be able to evaluate in the next 24 months.
Is it all hype to drum up investment? Possibly. But Altman's track record suggests it's worth taking his statements at face value, at least for the sake of analysis.
As Roetzer highlights, Altman's 2021 essay, "Moore's Law for Everything," accurately predicted many AI developments before the release of ChatGPT. People weren't ready to listen then, but the predictions held true.
"Sam's history isn't to hype things up," says Roetzer. "Sam's history is to lay out what he thinks the near-term future looks like, hope people listen, and go about building the future."
In Three Observations, Altman also discussed the potential of AI agents as virtual coworkers—and the fact this is coming soon.
He used the example of a software engineering agent, suggesting that within 12-18 months, these agents could handle tasks that might take a junior human engineer 2-3 days.
“When you try and imagine a world one to two years out where any business leader has the current most advanced level of technology available to them for next to nothing—that's a really bizarre world to try and imagine."
Altman envisions a future with thousands, even millions, of these agents working across various fields of knowledge work. While they'll require human supervision, their impact on human labor will be massive.
Roetzer points out an important consideration, stating industries facing talent gaps (accounting, insurance, healthcare) may see AI "digital workers" filling those roles, ultimately creating job displacement.
Altman paints a picture of a future with rapid, transformative change driven by AI. He hints at a world with incredible advancements in science, medicine, and overall prosperity. However, he remains vague about the specific societal and economic implications, leaving it to others to imagine the details.
So, whether you believe Altman's predictions or not, it's crucial to consider their potential impact. Dismissing them as mere hype risks missing a critical opportunity to prepare for a future where AI plays an increasingly significant role.
As Roetzer emphasizes:
"I think dismissing this as hype to raise money is very, very nearsighted and I would not fall into that trap, because I think you miss the chance to actually think about the bigger picture if you do that."
