Google just dropped a game-changing update to NotebookLM, its AI-powered research tool. And it’s got people buzzing about the future of personalized learning and business research.
NotebookLM is Google's personalized AI research assistant. It has existed in experimental form since 2023, with Google quietly adding powerful new features and capabilities.
Using NotebookLM, you create virtual notebooks where you upload documents, slides, PDFs, websites, and more (up to 500,000 words per source)—and it “instantly becomes an expert in the information that matters most to you,” according to Google.
Today, NotebookLM is powered by Google’s Gemini 1.5 AI model, which analyzes, summarizes, and connects the dots between all your sources.
It’s like having a super-smart research assistant at your fingertips.
But that’s not the only thing turning heads (or perking up ears). NotebookLM now has a new Audio Overviews feature that is one of the coolest AI features we’ve seen in awhile.
I broke everything down with Marketing AI Institute founder and CEO Paul Roetzer on Episode 115 of The Artificial Intelligence Show.
NotebookLM can now create an “audio overview” of any material you upload, simulating a deep dive conversation into that material between two AI-generated hosts.
What stands out is just how lifelike these two AI-generated hosts sound. Google is clearly leveraging some insane voice generation technology to produce these conversations.
"It is insanely conversational,” says Roetzer. “They use analogies, they use filler words, like it truly sounds like a real conversation and it's incredibly valuable.”
Audio Overviews are the latest, greatest part of NotebookLM. But the tool as a whole is what’s potentially transformative, says Roetzer.
“It's one of the most impressive AI products I've ever tested,” he says. "If two years ago someone created this product, they would have raised a hundred million dollars like in their seed round.”
After extensive testing, he could immediately see huge applications in business.
"I honestly can't imagine moving forward where I won't use this tool in every one of those use cases,” he says.
NotebookLM's latest update isn't just impressive—it's also a peek behind the curtain of what’s really going on at major AI labs.
"You just realize how further ahead these research labs are than what we likely have access to," says Roetzer. “And you realize how much further voice capabilities are than what we have access to right now.”
While NotebookLM is still labeled “experimental,” any business leader can start using it right now to change how they do research and learn about topics.
Anyone who does will quickly see (or, rather, hear):
The future of AI-assisted research is here. And it sounds surprisingly human.
